Synopsis:

Position radio determination methods and radar methods. Emphasis is laid on satellite methods of position determination. Student will study principles and applications especially for air navigation and air traffic control. He can exploit obtained knowledge in radio and aircraft industry, civil and military aircraft operations, air traffic control, geodesy and cartography.

Requirements:

Student has to pass final test.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Navigation and its task. Automatic direction finder

2. VOR, DME and ILS systems

3. Satellite navigation, GPS, GLONASS, EGNOS and GALILEO systems

4. Radars: primary and secondary, active and passive. Principles. Main parameters, frequency bands

5. Target echo properties, fluctuation

6. Radar signal propagation, environment influence, clutter, rain and wave returns

7. Radar equation, noise temperature of system, maximum range and coverage, tracking equation

8. Determination of direction to signal source; radar coverage

9. Active radar, timing, classification, block diagram

10. Primary radar signal processing - used signals, their properties, pulse compression

11. Doppler filtering; target detection and CFAR

12. Displays and indicators, target identification and tracking

13. Secondary surveillance radar, basics, signals, construction; IFF

14. Passive radar, principles, position assessment and accuracy

1. Demonstration of navigation computation and their application

2. Visit on a board of Czech airlines aircraft

3. Radar equation, range assessment, radar parameters computation

4. Demonstration of radar function

5. Visit of ATC centre

6. Visit of ATC centre

7. Final test and credit
