Synopsis:

Basic ideas on multi-atomic molecules and molecular matter, and on structure-to-physical properties relations. Methods of molecular structure determination.

1. Basic terms; Historical connections

2. Introduction to quantum mechanics; Simple models

3. Electronic structure of atoms; Chemical bond

4. Electronic structure of molecules; Equilibrium geometry; Rotational and vibrational motion of molecules

5. Molecular symmetry; Isomerism; Chirality

6. Electrical and magnetical properties of molecules; Intermolecular interactions

7.Methods of structure determination I(Mass spectroscpy, Rotational and vibrational spectroscopy)

8.Methods of structure determination II (Diffraction methods, NMR, Photoelectron spectroscopy)

9. Molecular crystals; Self-assebly; Molecular machines

10. Macromolecules - synthetic polymers and biopolymers

11. Basic terms of polymer physics (molecular architecture, configurational states, thermal behaviour, crystalization of polymers)

12.Physical aspects of selected biopolymers function

13. Searching in chemical databases; Targeted synthesis of compounds with desired properties

Students will become acquainted with the structure and properties of molecules and with the principles of structure determination methods.
