Synopsis:

Principles and technologies utilised in local area networks (LANs), starting from shared media (bus, ring) networks, their interconnection and concluding with current switching technologies (virtual LANs, ATM) and wireless. Attention is given to communication protocols for LANs and to network operating systems (client support, servers, and gateways).

1. Local area networks, media sharing FDMA and TDMA, access control

2. Random access techniques: Aloha, CSMA, stability

3. Ethernet technologies - 10BASE5, 10BASE2, 10BASE-T

4. Switched Ethernet, Fast Ethernet. Gigabit Ethernet

5. Deterministic access technologies: ARCNet, IEEE 802.4, 100VG-AnyLAN

6. Broadband and metropolitan networks: HFC and DQDB technologies

7. Ring technologies. Access Control, reconfiguration, Token Ring, FDDI

8. Synchronous connections PDH/SDH, ISDN, ATM

9. ATM technology, LAN emulation, virtual networks

10. Wireless networks: spread spectrum, FHSS, CDMA

11. Wireless technologies: IEEE 802.11(b,a,g), HiPerLAN, Bluetooth

12. LAN protocols: IEEE 802.2 LLC, NetBIOS, TCP/IP

13. Novell Netware architecture: protocols IPX, SPX

14. LAN management: network analyzers, SNMP, RMON
