Synopsis:

After completion of the course the students will: comprehend the (increasing) complexity of building energy/environmental systems; have an insight into how computer modelling and simulation is a viable approach to building performance prediction; be aware of the theoretical and operational principles underlying advanced building performance simulation software; possess practical skills in using the technology in a design support context.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

Energy modelling techniques exploring different building simulation environments. Heat and mass transfer through solids, transfer by convection, heat and light transfer by radiation, energy transfer by electricity. Building structure, auxiliary systems, control systems - modelling approaches, level of abstraction, when to use which approach. Occupants, indoor quality. Thermal comfort and human thermoregulation models, indoor air quality, lighting energy performance. Outdoor environment, climatic data, reference climate years. Integrated building and system performance, levels of abstraction. Quality control, verification, validation. Modelling and simulation in system desing and performance evaluation.
