Synopsis:

Planning is vastly dependent on creation, gathering and evaluation of spatial data and information. The course is focused on introduction to the information technologies used in the planning process. The main topics are intorduction to the leading Geographic information system (GIS) solutions, principles of GIS functionality, GIS data and data models and namely basics of the spatial analyses used for urban planning. During the course students elaborate the seminar paper targeted to GIS analysis or GIS data processing in relation with the selected urban planning problem. Course is led with the accent to the practical training of the work with GIS software in a computer lab. The software used in this course is ESRI ArcGIS Desktop.

Major topics: 1. Introduction to GIS, GIS fundamentals and principles. 2. GIS software, Introduction to ESRI software. 3. Data, layers, symbolisation. 4. Data sources. 5. Layouts, drawings. 6. Data creation, editing. 7. Attribute table operation. 8. Working with layers, overaly functions (buffers, clipping, combining layers). 9. Raster data operation. 10. Search analyses, multicriterial analyses.
