Synopsis:

The subject describes the power engineering as a part of the state economy and explains the power engineering in connection with environment. It explains principles of electric strength of insulation systems and describes some electric phenomena which may be dangerous to insulation systems. It shows the way of protection of insulation systems

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Structure of power systems, voltage levels.

2. Basic concept of dielectric strength.

3. Equipment of HV laboratories.

4. High voltage measurement.

5. Electric field analysis techniques.

6. Electric breakdown in gases, types of discharges.

7. Liquid dielectrics, influence of plates on electric strength.

8. Solid dielectrics, mechanism of breakdown.

9. El. discharges on the surface of insulation, partial discharges.

10. Overvoltages, surge arresters, suggestion of insulation levels.

11. Surges in windings of electric machines.

12. Types of insulators and HV cables.

13. Energy and energy conversion.

14. Power engineering as a part of the state economy.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Safety rules, visit to high voltage laboratory.

2. Instruction and test of safety prescriptions.

3. Visit to a GIS.

4. Visit to a power plant.

5. Measurement with the sphere gap, construction of the voltmeter scale.

6. Voltage-time characteristics of dielectrics, electric strength of paper insulation.

7. Parameters of the HV impulse generator, evaluation of U50 by the standard method.

8. Impulse-time-voltage characteristics and evaluation of the U50 by „up-and-down“ method.

9. Surface discharges, measurement of models of a bushing and a support insulator.

10. Measurement of electric field by the capacitive probe.

11. Breakdown characteristics under DC and AC voltage.

12. Surges in transformer's winding, repetitive impulse generator.

13. Numerical solution of some examples.

14. Evaluation of student's work during the course
