Lecturer:
Daniel Tischler (gar.)
Tutor:
Daniel Tischler (gar.)
Supervisor:
Department of Applied Physics
Synopsis:

The course deals with surfaces layers, their physical, chemical, mechanical and other characteristics. It provides information about possible surface finishing, both mechanical and chemical. The course then covers the various of thin layer depositions. Both classic methods (CVD,PVD) and advanced methods (IBAD) are detailed described. Besides that, the course informs students about different types of layers, and compares their properties. Moreover the thin layers evaluation methods is analyzed, together with the possibilities and restrictions of its methods.

Requirements:

Basic knowledge of the fundamental courses Physics I, Physics II. Knowledge of the basic technology is an advantage.Semester report is necessary for assessment, the exam is oral.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the subject. Key words. Purpose of the subject.

2. Physical pure substances and their properties. Surface tension. Chemisorption and

Physisorption. Adsorption. Diffusion. Adhesion.

3. Surfaces - mechanical, optical, chemical and corrosion properties.

4. Wear of surfaces and its types.

5. Mechanical modification of layers.

6. Plasma and its technical usage.

7. Modification of layers - chemical finishing of surface, ion nitriding.

8. Vacuum and vacuum technologies.

9. Layers preparation- physical methods; PVD. Ion Implantation,. IBAD.

10. Layers preparation - chemical methods: CVD, PACVD.

11. Analyses and methods of investigation layers and thin films.

12. Importance and types of wear resistance or lubrication layers.

13. Assessment and exam.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Various methods of preparing of thin layers preparation. Visit of a specialization laboratory. Semester report, solution and consultations.

Study Objective:

The main purpose of the subject is to provide students information about basic theories of physical surfaces layers , and to give fundamentals of issues concerning thin layers and their applications in different areas of industry, particularly of in mechanical engineering. The aim of the study is to provide students with advanced knowledge of the subject, which can be applied in their career. More specifically, the students should be able to propose the optimal surface layer for a given engineering application, as well as specify its production technology.
