Synopsis:

The „Selected Chapters in Physics“ course is an advanced Physics course for MSc. Biomedical Engineering students.

The course overviews fundamentals in thermodynamics, statistical physics and electrodynamics. Students will go through an arsenal of methods and procedures that they will utilize in their further study. The main stress is given on the understanding of laws and principles, and students' ability to solve examples.

Requirements:

Fundaments in differential and integral calculus, statistics and probability, mechanics, electricity and magnetism

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Definitions and fundamental concepts: Thermodynamics, Statistical Physics, Ideal Gas, Theromodynamic System, Atom, Atomic mass unit etc.

2. Internal energy of a system, heat, temperature, work, equilibrium, equation of state, simple processes with ideal gas

3. First Law of Thermodynamics and its applications, Heat capacity and Specific heat capacity

4. Second Law of Thermodynamics, Carnot cycle,

5. Mathematical formulation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, Thermodynamic temperature scale, Entropy, The Third Law of Thermodynamics

6. Kinetic Gas theory, Ideal Gas Model, Review of basics in Probability theory

7. Derivation of the velocity component distribution, gas pressure, gas temperature, quadratic mean-velocity

8. Internal Energy of a single-atom gas, equipartition theorem, statistical interpretation of entropy

9. Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution,

10. Gas in a force field, barometric equation

11. Phase transitions, crystalic and amorphous solids, x-ray structural analysis

12. Temperature characteristics of crystals
