Synopsis:

Overview of principles and applications in the interdisciplinary sphere, connecting physics, optics and biology. Interaction of laser radiation with matter, interaction of radiation with tissue, biology basics, photobiology, bioimaging, basics of lasers, laser safety, optical biosensors, photodynamical therapy, optical manipulation with cells, nanotechnology for biophotonics, biomaterials for photonics.

Requirements:

Assesment : active participation on the solution of exercises.

Examination : fulfilment of requirements for assessment, knowledge covering content of the course. Tests in 4., 8., and 12. week of the semester. Attendance 70 %. Two semester works and two home works.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Biophotonics as scientific discipline

2.Interaction of radiation with matter I (dual character of light, photons, coherence, interference, diffraction, bounds in molecules)

3.Basic of laser technique (laser principle, types of lasers, laser applications in photobiology and in medicine, laser safety)

4.Basic of biology

5.Interaction of radiation with matter II. (interaction light - molecule, interaction with matter, indication and detection of interaction mechanisms)

6.Absorption and emission of light, principles of biological spectroscopy (absorption, emission, fluorescence, raman, Fourier infrared, etc.)

7.Bioimaging (principles, microscopy, types of microscopes - transmission, fluorescence, tunneling, electron, etc.)

8.Optical biosensors (principles, contruction, applications), photomultipliers, semiconductor detectors and sensors

9.Photodynamical therapy (principles, field of applications), cytometry

10.Interaction of radiation III. (interaction with tissue, regeneration, phototherapy, optical coherence tomography)

11.Cells optical manipulation

12.Nanotechnology for biophotonic- bionanophotonic

13.Biomaterials for biophotonic

14.Exam preparation

Syllabus of tutorials:

Bachelor course is without practical exams, but there is possibility to attend practical exams at faculty with master degree students.

Study Objective:

Overview of principles and applications in the interdisciplinary sphere, connecting physics, optics and biology. Interaction of laser radiation with matter, interaction of radiation with tissue, biology basics, photobiology, bioimaging, basics of lasers, laser safety, optical biosensors, photodynamical therapy, optical manipulation with cells, nanotechnology for biophotonics, biomaterials for photonics.
