Synopsis:

Introduction to the rocket propulsion, characterization of space launch vehicles and their payloads, their construction and operation.

Syllabus of lectures:

1) Space Launch Vehicles Architecture I: history, the classification of the launch vehicles (expendable, reusable, single-stage, multi-stage, type of propellant, payloads, manned/unmanned), the subsystems of the launch vehicles.

2) Space Launch Vehicles Architecture II: the construction ofthe single-staged or multi-staged launch vehicles, the optimalisation of the stage numbers vs the chosen payload.

3) Space Launch Vehicles Architecture III: reusable vehicles, the review of the actually used launch vehicles, proposals of the new prospective launch vehicles.

4) Chemical Propulsion I: general survey, the thermodynamics of the chemical propulsion, the internal ballistics of rocket engines, the nozzle expansion processes, the thrust force of the rocket engine, the effective exhaust velcity, the specific impulse, the engine performance, the rocket engines using liquid and solid propellants, hybrid propellants.

5) Chemical Propulsion II: liquid propellant rocket engines-fundamentals, the combustion and possible vibrational instabilities, examples of oxidizers and fuels, the rocket engines construction pressure-fed, gas generator, staged combustion, expander), combustion of solid propellant. The construction of rocket engine- combustion chamber and nozzle, problems of the rocket engine cooling.

6) Chemical Propulsion III: The incorporation of rocket engines into the rocket stages, thrust vector control, the reusable rocket engines, overview of the actually used rocket engines.

7) Launch systems ? spaceports, systems of transport and final assembly of launcher, requirements for manipulation with payload, types of lauchpads and their subsystems (telemetry, delivery of propellants, ignition sequence and plume deflection, safety measures)

8) Ground segment ? communication with satellites and space probes, location of communication and control centers, duration and frequency of communication sessions, manufacturing and testing facilities

9) Physical propulsion I. ? special properties of physical propulsion, cold-gas thrusters, electrothermal systems

10) Physical propulsion II. ? motion of charged particles and behaviour of plasma in electric and magnetic fields, electrostatic propulsion

11) Physical propulsion III. ? plasma thrusters, nuclear-thermal thrusters, solar sails, uncommon and conceptual propulsion

12) Unmanned spacecrafts ? history, fields of application of satellites and space probes, construction od spacecrafts, autonomous systems

13) Manned spacecrafts ? history, animals and humans in space, spaceships, space stations, long-term stay of humans in space

Study Objective:

Introduction to the space propulsion, construction of launch vehicles and their payloads, organization and construction of launch complexes, construction of satellites and piloted spaceships.
