Synopsis:

The course is focused towards the newest trends and development in technologies of lowering emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases from off-gases form energy processes. particularly combustion. This is related to fossile, renewable and alternative fuels. In the course are in details discussed methods of lowering acid gas concentrations (sulphur oxides, HCl. HF), nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, mercury and other heavy metals, also in relation to CCS/U technologies, that are focused on capturing CO2 from oxidation processes. A separate part is dedicated to the CCS/U., focusing mostly on the capture side of the process. The exercises comprise of laboratory work, where the students learn about performance of some of these technologies in practice. Overview of the course topics is following:

•National and European legislation, air protection law, LCP and MCP directives

•Mechanisms of formation of pollutants

•Technologies of acid gas removal, direct desulfurization of fluidized bed

•Primary and secondary measures for NOx removal, SCR and SNCR technologies

•Mercury, its forms, distribution in combustion process, capture possibilities

•Particulate matter and its separation

•Technologies Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilization (CCS/U) - overview

•Oxyfuel combustion, pre-combustion, post-combustion technologies of CO2 capture.
