Synopsis:

The content of the course is fundamental information about structural materials with the main emphasis on metals.

Structure of materials, mechanical properties and their testing, production and manufacturing technologies are explained

in mutual relations, together with a brief list of the most important materials.

1. Introduction to physical metallurgy

1.1. Crystalline structure, crystal lattice defects, introduction to the theory of dislocations, diffusion

1.2. Thermodynamics of metals and alloys, metals and alloys solidification. Theory of phase diagrams, phase

transformations in solid state.

1.3. Hardening: plastic deformation, precipitation, martensitic transformation. Softening processes: recovery and

recrystallization

1.4. The iron–iron carbide phase diagram, heat and mechanical treatment of steels, list of steels

1.5. Nonferrous metals and their alloys

2. Non-metallic materials: ceramics, polymers, composites

3. Materials failures with mechanical causes, testing of materials

3.1. Deformation and fracture behaviour of metals and alloys

3.2. Fundamental mechanical tests of materials

3.3. Introduction to corrosion

4. Introduction to engineering technology

4.1. Fundamental production technologies: casting, forming, powder metallurgy

4.2. Fundamental manufacturing technologies: cutting, boring, machining, grinding, welding, soldering and brazing
