Synopsis:

The course is focused on solving problems connected with the metrology of electrical quantities and application of modern tools to it. The lectures acquaint students with the up-to-date methods of precise measurement of electrical quantities with an accent to correct evaluation of accuracy.

Requirements:

The basic knowledge of mathematical statistics, the theory of electromagnetic field and circuit theory.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction. Quantities and units. The international system of units SI.

2. Standards of electrical quantities. Intristic standards of voltage and resistance based on Josephson and quantum Hall effect.

3. Thompson-Lampard capacity standard. Reference, working and group standards.

4. Methods applicable to mutually relating the standards.

5. Minimization of systematic and random errors of both direct and indirect measurements.

6. Evaluation of uncertainties of both direct and indirect measurements. Examples of calculation.

7. Determination of the coverage factor for a specified confidence level. Uncertainty evaluation using the Monte Carlo method.

8. Inductive voltage dividers, current comparators and optimization of their parameters.

9. Kibble´s balance and its application to Planck constant determination.

10. Josephson comparators. Measurement of voltage and power in the audiofrequency range.

11. Bridges for resistance, capacitance and self-inductance measurement. Methods for mutual inductance measurement.

12. Mutually relating of two- or four pairs standards of electrical impedance using coaxial bridges.

13. Discussion.

14. Final test.

Syllabus of tutorials:

5th week: Visit to the Czech Metrology Institute (4 hours)

10th week: Laboratory demonstrations (6 hours):

1. Employment of the Thompson-Lampard capacitor in calibration of a capacitance standard.

2. Measurement of frequency characteristics of a resistance standard by comparing it with a reference resistor with calculable frequency dependence.

3. Employment of imitators of small resistances in calibration of current shunts.

4. Calibration of a capacitance box by a step-up method.

Study Objective:

To acquaint students with new trends in solving problems connected with the metrology of electrical quantities, with the up-to-date methods for precise measurement of electrical quantities and correct evaluation of measurement accuracy.
