Supervisor:
Department of Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics
Synopsis:

This course extends the knowledge gained in the course of Fluid Mechanics about the knowledge of computational fluid dynamics. Emphasis is placed on understanding the basic principles of computational fluid dynamics based on using commercial codes. Selected problems of internal and external aerodynamics are solved.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

• Introduction to computational fluid dynamics (discussion of current state, applications, pre-processing, postprocessing)

• Governing equations of fluid dynamics (Reynolds transport theorem, conservation laws, ...)

• Compressible flow versus incompressible flow – Governing equations, …

• Physical significance of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type equations, discussion of boundary conditions

• Introduction to turbulence modelling (scales of turbulent flow, turbulence modelling discussion, ...)

• Statistical models of turbulence (k-epsilon and k-omega model of turbulence, determination of constants of turbulence

models, ...)

• Discretization of simplified models using the finite difference method

• Finite volume method

• Discretization of the convection and diffusion equation using the finite volume method

• Convective schemes in finite volume method (upwind scheme, power-law scheme, ...)

• Pressure and velocity coupling in the incompressible flow solution

• Algorithms of the numerical solution of incompressible fluid flow (pressure correction method, ...)
