Synopsis:

More than one third worldwide energy input in primary energy is used in conversion technologies producing electricity. It is without doubt for next few decades, that the dominating conversion technology will be steam an gas turbines in power plants using both, fossil including nuclear, and renewable energy sources.

•Introduction. History, recent developments and trends of steam and gas turbines.

•Condensing, backpressure and extraction steam turbines.

•Basic principles of energy transformations in a turbine stage.

•Reaction stage, impulse stage, Curtis stage. Losses and efficiencies of turbine stage.

•Turbine stage with a short (one-dimensional approach) and long (three-dimensional effects) blade.

•Thermodynamic analysis, efficiency and design of a multi-stage steam turbine.

•Steam turbines governing.

•Off-design performance prediction of steam turbines: Stodola's ellipse law.

•Condensers in steam power plant. Wet cooling tower. Dry cooling with air cooled condenser.

•Gas turbines: principles, design and operation.

•Gas turbines governing.

•Off-design performance prediction of gas turbines.
