Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with technologies for solid waste, liquid waste and gaseous emissions treatment. Students get an overview of block and process flow diagrams, mass balances, energy balances and economics of combustion methods, landfilling, solid waste composting, wastewater treatment technologies, and technologies for cleaning of gaseous emissions including new trends in waste treatment by chemical, thermochemical methods (pyrolysis, FT synthesis for chemicals), biochemical treatment (anaerobic and aerobic fermentation) and biological methods.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Waste treatment technologies – waste production in industrial sectors, waste classification, overview of technologies, biofuels, bioproducts.

2. Technologies and equipment for pretreatment of wastes – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

3. Conventional technologies for solid waste treatment – combustion, landfilling, composting - principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

4. Technologies for waste water, sludge and gaseous emission treatment – principles, flowsheets for municipal and industrial waste water technologies, design of key machines and equipment, reduction technologies for exhaust gases.

5. Technologies and equipment for waste pyrolysis – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

6. Technologies and equipment for waste gasification – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

7. Technologies and equipment for waste conversion to biogas, biohydrogen and bioethanol - principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

8. Technologies and equipment for oil waste conversion to biodiesel and bio crude oil - principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

9. Technologies and equipment for production of biofuels of 3rd generation – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

10. Technologies and equipment for production of biofuels of 4th generation – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

11. Technologies and equipment for production of bioplastics using enzymes and fungi – principles, flowsheets, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment, operational experiences.

12. Legislation, risk analysis of technologies, risks for environment, future of waste treatment.

13. Techno-economic assessment of waste treatment, vision of waste treatment, material-energy recycling and biofuels production.
