Synopsis:

The course is focused on basic principles of design of structural elements exposed to fire. The principles of loads applied at fire and methods for evaluating gas temperature and temperature of structural elements are explained. The design methods for simple steel, composite and timber structures are given.

Requirements:

Basic knowledge of theoretical mechanics and statics, basic knowledge of design of steel, timber and composite steel-concrete elements.

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction to fire safety design, Thermal analysis, Principles of heat transfer, Fire design of steel structures, Fire design of composite and timber structures, Examples of fire experiments, validation of numerical models

Syllabus of tutorials:

Calculation of gas temperature in fire compartment according to standard and parametric temperature curve, Design of hot-rolled IPE steel beam and specifying of fire resistance using design chart, Evaluation of fire resistance of partially encased steel beam in a concrete slab, Design of axially loaded steel column of required fire resistance, Design of fire protected composite steel and concrete beam of required fire resistance, Design of pinned centrally loaded timber column of required fire resistance

Study Objective:

Understanding of basic principles of structural fire design including determination of gas temperature, temperature of a structural element and its mechanical behaviour.
