Supervisor:
Department of Landscape Water Conservation
Synopsis:

The course focuses on structures applied on small water courses, mainly small water reservoirs, dry reservoirs, torrent control structures, renaturalisations etc. Lectures consist mainly of technical aspects of design of such structures, wider circumstances, relations with surrounding space and the role in the landscape are also discussed. During the seminars, the conception of design of small water reservoir is explained and practiced including design of single parts and objects.

Requirements:

Patricipants need to have knowledge in the field of hydraulics and hydrology corresponding to subjects thought in lower semesters. Expirience in use of CAD systems is also desirable. Students must participate personaly in seminar and submit individualy prepared study of building of small water reservoir to get assessment. The exam is written and includes all the matter presented during the semester.

Syllabus of lectures:

- Introduction - historical overview

- Small water reservoirs - definition, types

- Dams of small water reservoirs

- Flooded area, reservoir neigbourhood

- Bottom outlets

- Safety spillways

- Other funcitonal strucures

- Failures, reconstructions

- Sedimentation, sediment removal

- Water balance of small water reservoirs

- Water in small water reservoirs

- Dry reservoirs, polders

- Role of small water reservoirs in the landscape

- Principles of renaturalisation of small water courses in the landscape

- Principles of renaturalisation of small water courses in urban areas

- Nature close flood protection measures

- Vegetation along water courses

Syllabus of tutorials:

- placement of reservoir

- location and shape of dam

- dam construction

- conception of functional objects

- flooded area adjustment

- main canal tracing

- description of design idea

- calculations related to design of small water reservoir

Study Objective:

The aim of the course consists in presentation of most frequent types of structures built on small water courses and main principles of their design. Most time is spent on small water reservoirs, the rest focuses on renaturalisations and torrent control structures.
