Supervisor:
Department of Hydraulic Structures
Synopsis:

The subject of the course is the problems of failures and problems in the design and operation of hydraulic structures - weirs, dams, waterways and hydro power plants - with a focus on the foundation of structures. Students will be introduced to the solution of various geotechnical problems using examples of designed and operated water structures

Requirements:

Previous study

Syllabus of lectures:

1- Dam failures in the context of materials and construction types and international failure statistics

2 - Dams and earthquakes - types of dams, dam materials, soil stability (flow), design parameters

3 - Unsaturated soils in dam construction - suction phenomenon, compaction, explanation of pore pressures

4 - Dam construction in Canada and Russia, geological survey for dams in Azerbaijan

5 - Structural problems of embankment dams for dry reservoir

6 - Tailings dams and problems of internal erosion

7 - Deep geological investigation in dam construction - Plavinas HPP, Mosul HPP and Malpasset HPP accident

8 - FEM in geotechnical tasks of water engineer practice (types of tasks, possibilities of existing software)

9 - Possibilities of improving soil properties in dam construction and damage of embankment dams by animals

10 - Specifics of rock-fill dams - compaction, deformation, accidents and failures

11 - Reliability of emergency spillways and other outlet devices - lessons learned from the Oroville Hydroelectric Dam failure

12 - Reliability of emergency spillways and other outlet devices - lessons learned from the Oroville Dam accident

13 - Geological investigation of the NYAGAG dam and a recap and update on dam engineering

Syllabus of tutorials:

Earthquake - stability calculations for a concrete weighted dam

Landslides - searching for potential landslide areas

Slope stability - Peterson and Bishop method, current and pore pressures

Levee and bedrock seepage and stability calculations, uplift patterns, submitted elements

Shape design and structural design of the arch dam

FEM - geotechnical problem calculations - analysis of outputs

Presentation of seminar papers, consultation

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to familiarize students with experience in solving geotechnical problems of water structures and to further analyze this experience.
