Synopsis:

Subject DA1 is an introductory series of lectures on the history of architecture. It is intended to provide the student with a basic historical overview of the architecture of antiquity with overlaps into later epochs. It is subsidized by 2 hours per week.

The basis of the lectures is to acquaint the student not only with the history of ancient architecture, but also with theoretical works of antiquity and with the morphology of classical orders.

Requirements:

A short analysis of a selected topic from the history of ancient architecture, 2-3 pages + sources. The student submits the topic for the exam.

Examination:

Successful writing of an exam test in the development of ancient architecture and in the understanding of classical morphology

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Prehistoric times - megalithic buildings, architecture of natural peoples.

2. Ancient cultures of the Near East and Egypt.

3. The birth of classical culture. Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece.

4. Antiquity: the basis of European tradition. Vitruvius

5. Introduction to classical morphology and its use.

6. Antiquity inspires: the reception of classical architecture in the Middle Ages and modern times.

7. Hellenism - an experiment with classical form: „antique baroque“.

8. Roman city and private house, its structure and decoration. Pompeii and Herculaneum.

9. Rome - typology of public buildings.

10. The historicizing concept of antiquity in the 18th and 19th centuries.

11. Antiquity and art of the 20th century, postmodernism.

12. The demise of the empire, barbarized Hellenism, the periphery of the ancient world and Christianity.

13. The triumph of Islam: the Moorish style in Europe from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
