Synopsis:

The course aims at providing participants with general introduction to management from the point of view of large enterprises, as well as of NGOs and charities, and presentation of basic knowledge essential to performing managerial tasks. The course also provides an overview of the principal managerial conceptions. Participants will learn about organisational and management tools used in enterprises. Participants will benefit from applying their knowledge of compulsory subjects to case studies which will lead to their acquiring managerial and organisational skills.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Management theory: definition of management, evolution of management theories, circumstances that influenced management.

2.Organizational structure and design: determining organizational structure, division of work, hierarchies and matrices.

3.Managers and management: organization and management, structure and management of a company, levels of management in an organization, core activities of managers, organizational culture.

4.Human resources management: planning, recruitment and selection, appraisal, training and development, reward, discipline, legal and safety issues.

5.Developing people: group development, characteristics of groups, teams, team members, motivation.

6.Motivation, work and career: key variables in individual behavior, the power of teams motivation, empowerment, payment systems and salary structures, careers and management development.

7.Managers vs. Leaders: are managers leaders? And vice versa? Leadership styles, working with teams, influencing people.

8.Quality: reasons for, theories, control systems, national and international systems and standards, improving quality.

9.Marketing management: marketing or selling? Definitions and examples, relationship marketing, marketing planning, SWOT and PEST analysis, internal and external environments.

10.Project management: limited resources, managing people, managing time, managing money, planning tools (PERT, CPA, GANTT methods etc.)

11.Managing finance: the flow of money around a business, legal requirements, profit and loss account (income statement), balance sheet, cash flow statement, depreciation.

12.Analyzing company performance: annual reports, measurable parameters, comparing company performance.

13.International management: cultural factors.
