Synopsis:

Structure of organic compounds, properties of covalent bond, reactions on covalent bonds. Nomenclature of organic compounds (main chain, group, locants, prefixes and suffixes) . Spatial structures of organic compounds, double bond isomers, chirality, enantiomers and diastereomeric compounds. Configuration and conformation, relationships. Lewis structures, formal charges, acidity, hard and soft acids and bases. Resonance, aromaticity, classification of substituents, reactivity of polycyclic arenes. Intermediates: carbocations, carbanions, carbenes, radicals - electronic structure.

Requirements:

Knowledge of chemistry on the level of a graduate from a secondary grammar school.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Structure of organic compounds, properties of covalent bond, reactions on covalent bonds.

2. Nomenclature of organic compounds (main chain, group, locants, prefixes and suffixes) .

3. Spatial structures of organic compounds, double bond isomers, chirality, enantiomers and diastereomeric compounds. Configuration and conformation, relationships.

4. Lewis structures, formal charges, acidity, hard and soft acids and bases.

5. Resonance, aromaticity, classification of substituents, reactivity of polycyclic arenes.

6. Intermediates: carbocations, carbanions, carbenes, radicals - electronic structure. Electronic and steric effects on the stability of molecules and intermediates.

7. Mechanism of reactions: radical, nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution, radical and electrophilic addition, synchronous addition, cis- and trans- elimination.

8. Conversion of functional groups - main types of functional groups and their interconversion - substitution, addition, oxidation and reduction.

9. Skeleton building reactions (aldol, Grignard, malonester, cyanohydrine and so on).

10. Interesting rearrangements, photochemistry, enzymatic reactions.

11. The planning of organic synthesis, retrosynthetic approach. Relationship between structure of compounds and physicochemical properties and biological activity.

12. Photochemistry, enzymatic reactions.

13. Kinetics and termodynamics of organic reactions.

Study Objective:

The course of organic chemistry provides the students with the knowledge of the basic concepts of the structure and nomenclature of organic compounds, reaction mechanisms.

The students will acquire competence to apprehend the advanced specialised chemistry courses.
