Synopsis:

Basic course of Geology and Soil Mechanics for Civil Engineers. Introduction to geological processes, structural geology and hydrogeology. Soil behaviour description, introduction to multi-phase media, soil classification, compressibility and strength, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and deformation, applications in civil engineering.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to Geology, Plate tectonics. Geological processes

2. Magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary processes

3. Structural geology. Folding and fracturing. Seismography. Earthquake

4. Weathering, glaciation, karst geology, Hydrogeology, underground water

5. Slope deformations. Quaternary geology

6. Regional geology of the Czech Republic

7. Origin of soil, multi-phase media behaviour, soil water, ground-water flow

8. Soil description and classification, application in geotechnical engineering

9. Stresses in soil mass, effective stress concept

10. Compressibility of soils, principles of consolidation theory and limits of application

11. Shear resistance of soils and applications, laboratory and field testing

12. Lateral stresses, soil and groundwater action, retaining structures

13. Shallow footings, slope stability problems, methods of calculation

14. Soil compaction, quality control. Principles of site monitoring and instrumentation

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Rock forming minerals and course determination of rocks

2. Classification of Magmatic rocks (plutonic, intrussive and volcanics)

3. Classification of Sedimentary rocks (clastic, chemical, biogenic)

4. Classification of Metamorphic rocks (regionally metamorphosed and different way)

5. Particle-Size Distribution Curve (PSDC)

6. Determination of water content, bulk density, saturation, soil classification

7. Effective Stress Calculation

8. Soil compressibility - laboratory tests and evaluation of results

9. Shear resistance - laboratory tests and evaluation of results

10. Retaining Wall - Earth Pressure Calculation

11. Slope stability calculation (Excavation)

12. Proctor Compaction Test

Study Objective:

Acquaintance with geological processes and the role of geology in geotechnical engineering. Description of soils, soil properties and soil behaviour with respect to different site conditions and human activities.
