Strength and deformation properties of soils, applications. Principles of design of geotecGeological and geotechnical model of the environment. Basic geological processes. Quaternary geology, hydrogeology.hnical structures.

Syllabus of lectures:

The role of geology in civil engineering practice, the structure of the Earth, the theory of new global tectonics.

Magmatism, volcanism, review of igneous and volcanoclastic rocks, metamorphism.

Geology of sedimentary rocks, mechanism of sedimentation, diagenesis. Stratigraphic table, technical properties of rocks.

Structural geology, tectonic faults, practical significance. Measurement of tectonic features.

Weathering of rocks, formation of soils, distribution, geological activity of glaciers, wind, surface water. Groundwater, chemistry.

Slope movements, factors, classification, types. Methods of remediation of slope movements, practical examples.

Engineering regional geology, ground structure.

Soils as the most used building material, formation of soils, particulate nature, multiphase system.

Index properties of soils, plasticity, consistency of soils, classification systems and their importance.

Water flow through soils. Principle of effective stresses. Deformation characteristics, consolidation of soils.

Strength of soils, laboratory and field measurements.

Principles of design of geotechnical structures - slope stability, earth pressures, mechanics of flat foundations.

Compaction of soils. Importance of geotechnical structures in geoenvironmental issues.

Study Objective:

The common aim of the course is to explain the basics of geotechnics with subsequent use in the construction of structures in interaction with the subsoil (Building foundation), using the geological environment for new structures (Earth structures) or within this environment (Underground structures).
