Synopsis:

The subject describes the basics of the design of steel and composite bridges.

Requirements:

The student must have basic knowledge about design of steel structures according to the EN standards, at least 1 term course.

Syllabus of lectures:

The general definitions and principles of bridge designing. Different disposition of bridges, description of bridge deck, bridge equipment as bearings, expansion joints, waterproofing, crash barriers, rails etc. Beam bridges, composite beam bridges, truss bridges. Grid bridges. Skew bridges. Horizontally curved bridges. Frame bridges. Arch bridges. Cable stayed and suspension bridges with long span. Rehabilitation of steel bridges.

Preliminary design of a composite steel - concrete railway bridge structure.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Cross section, bridge layout

2. Load

3. Cross beam design

4. Main girder design

Study Objective:

To obtain basic knowledge about types of steel structures of bridges and their structural parts and their design
