Supervisor:
Department of Road Structures
Synopsis:

The course is intended for PhD students who are interested in expanding their knowledge in the field of materials research and assessment of the behaviour of road structures. In particular, the aim is to provide students with knowledge in the area of advanced functional (performance-based) and dynamic testing, which is used in the in-depth assessment and evaluation of materials and composites of road structures.

Requirements:

Submission of the seminar essay and the results of the experimental task. Presentation of the findings and results of the experimental task in the form of a 20-minute presentation followed by an interview with the student.

Additional requirements: with regard to the experimental part of the taught professional course, it is the student's responsibility to physically participate in the practice and solution of the experimental tasks (attendance).

Syllabus of lectures:

The curriculum of the lectures, which most often have the character of joint meetings with a small group of PhD students and are complemented by joint professional discussion, corresponds to the content of the course.

*1. Approaches and tests for determining the superstructural properties of aggregates (including mineral filler)

*2. Principles of formulation design and verification of hydraulic binder bond mixtures and cold recycling mixtures

*3. Bituminous binders and advanced testing approaches (performance-based tests, functional assessment approach, rheological models)

*4. Use of dynamic shear rheometer rheological measurements of bituminous binders

*5. Measured engineering characteristics and properties using DSR for bituminous binders (stiffness, fatigue, creep) and MSCR testing

*6. Design of compacted and mastic asphalt mixtures and material characteristics

*7. Functional testing of asphalt mixtures - principles, advantages and basis for characterisation of composites

*8. Pavement cement concrete (resistance to alternating effects of frost and water, thixotropy)

Syllabus of tutorials:

Laboratory practice (workshops):

• Basic testing of bituminous binders, including dynamic viscosity and force ductility

• Tests performed on dynamic shear rheometer

• Tests performed on bending beam rheometer, including laboratory ageing of bituminous binders

• Dynamic functional tests performed on universal testers (stiffness, creep, fatigue, dynamic modulus, etc.)

• Practicing the design and optimisation of the composition of asphalt mixture or hydraulically bonded mixtures

• Performing specified tasks with verification of advanced characteristics of bituminous binder or asphalt mix or hydraulic binder cemented mix
