Synopsis:

Deflections by the principle of virtual work. Statically indeterminate planar frames and trusses, force method. Slope deflection method and Cross (moment distribution) method for frames. Secondary moments in trusses. Prerequisities:Statically determinate planar frames, trusses and gridworks (balconies), reactions, internal forces diagrams. Active knowledge and expedience is required in solving examples. Reasonable minimum is 8 credits in structural mechanics

Requirements:

For Civil Engineering students: 132SM2E, for Erasmus students: Statically determinate planar frames, trusses and gridworks (balconies), reactions, internal forces diagrams. Active knowledge and expedience is required in solving examples.

8 credits in structural mechanics are reasonable minimum.

Syllabus of lectures:

Deflections in straight beams by the integration and conjugate beams

Deflections by the principle of virtual forces in statically determinate planar frames

Deflections by the principle of virtual forces in statically determinate planar trusses

Thermal load and support settlement

Force method with a single redundant

Force method with multiple redundants

Deflections in statically indeterminate structures

Symmetry issue, conditions and application

Slope deflection method assumptions, end moments formulas

Slope deflection method without sidesway

Slope deflection method with sidesway, application of the principle of virtual displacements

Cross method, relaxation

Secondary moments in trusses

Syllabus of tutorials:

Numerical examples on the above topics in class and in regular homework tasks.

Study Objective:

Ability to solve internal forces and deformations of planar frames and trusses and gridwork structures applying the force or displacement method. Some techniques of the finite element method.
