Synopsis:

Basic assumptions and basic equations of theory of elasticity. Assumptions on deformation and stress distribution in beams. Tension and compression, pure bending, bending moments in two planes, combination of axial and bending stresses. Core of a cross section. Differential equation of elasticity curve. Shear stresses in flexural beams. Free torsion. Elastic-plastic and plastic state of cross-section. Stability of beams. 2D problems, walls and plates.

Requirements:

101MT02, 132SM02 or 132ST02

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction

2. Simple tension/compression

3. Simple bending of beams

4. Simple bending of beams, deflection

5. Complex bending of beams, a combination of normal force and bending moments

6. Test I.

7. Stress, equilibrium equations, shear stress

8. Torsion and warping

9. Limit state analysis, elastic, elastic-plastic and plastic stress states

10. Buckling of beam-columns - Euler load, energy method

11. Test II.

12. 3D stress state

13. Review lecture

Syllabus of tutorials:

The outline of exercises follows the outline of lectures.

Study Objective:

Students will be able to solve normal and shear stresses and strains in beams at bending and torsion, critical load and effective length of columns. They will know the main features of stress distribution in walls and plates.
