Synopsis:

Lectures: Description of the mechanisms

that govern the movement of fluids and contaminant transport in

aquifers and in the unsaturated zone. Seminars in the computer

lab: Introduction in the simulation models and their

application.

Requirements:

1. Solute transport in the subsurface, complexity of the problem.

2. Basics of the flow in porous media.

3. Hydraulic functions of the porous media for variably saturated flow description

4. Flow equations. Velocity field determination.

5. Transport processes. Miscible flow, conservative transport.

6. Advection-dispersion equation, boundary conditions, methods of solution.

7. Dispersion characteristics, scale dependence, methods of determination.

8. Transport of reacting species, types of reactions.

9. Numerical simulation models.

10. Tracer experiments in the subsurface hydrology.

11. Multiphase (immiscible) flow, NAPLs.

12. Preferential flow and its impact on transport processes.

13. Geochemical and multiphase simulation models.Case studies.

14. Summary and outlines.
