Synopsis:

The course summarizes the fundamentals of ionizing radiation spectroscopy and its applications. In particular, it deals with the properties and parameters of spectrometric systems for different types of radiation. Furthermore, the use of computational techniques for analyzing spectra, optimized calibration methodologies. They outlined the basic characteristics and parameters of spectrometric systems with semiconductor and scintillation detectors commonly used in practice.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Spectrometry of ionizing radiation -general.

2.Sources of the radiation, interaction with matter.

3.Decay schemes, interpretation.

4.Spectrometric systems for alpha, beta gamma and X rays.

5.Theory of the interaction with matter, mechanism of scintillations.

6.Signal from semiconductor detectors.

7.Using of the scintillation and semiconductor spectrometers.

8.Parameters and characterization of spectrometric systems.

9.Semiconductor detectors, types, parameters, selection of the detector.

10.Energy and efficiency calibration.

11.Modeling and computation of detector parameters, codes LABSOS, ISOCS.

12.Peaks detection in the spectra, first and second derivation, criterion of real peak existence.

13.Primary standards of the energy.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Knowledge of basic applications spectrometry of ionizing radiation, its properties, spectroscopic characteristics of systems and evaluation of spectra.

Abilities:

Using computational techniques for basic analyzing spectra, optimization of calibration methodologies, a meaningful analysis of spectra and identification of peaks in the spectra.
