Synopsis:

Classification of dispersion systems (suspensions, emulsions, foams, analytical, colloidal and coarse dispersions)

Colloidal dispersions and their properties. Kinetic properties (Brownian motion, diffusion, sedimentation), electrokinetic phenomena (electrophoresis, electroosmosis). Lyosols (phase, macromolecular and associative colloids).

Surfactants (inorganic, organic, organosilicate, ionic, non-ionic), micelles, critical micellar concentration).

Gels and their classification (reversible, irreversible, inorganic, organic, hydrogels, organogels). Stability of colloidal particles. Emulsions and their classification (dilute, concentrated and highly concentrated, direct, inverted). Properties, stability and structure (coagulation, coalescence, sedimentation).

Foams and their classification (dilute gas-in-liquid dispersions, wet and dry foams, foam stability, foam preparation, defoaming).

Rheological properties of dispersion systems.Einstein's equation for dilute dispersion systems. Effect of concentration, particle shape and their interaction on viscosity. Rheology of concentrated dispersion systems (time-dependent and independent non-Newtonian liquids, viscoelastic liquids, thixotropy, rheopexy). Viscosity measurements, viscometers, rheometers.
