Fundamentals of Pollution Control

Fundamentals of the air pollution control with the accent to methods of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants removal and propagation of pollutants in the atmosphere.
Following requirements are demanded: Fundamentals of legislation in air pollution control. Properties of solid particle emissions, principal separation methods. Principles of gaseous pollutants removal. Methods of flue gas desulphurization. Fuel combustion and nitrogen oxide formation. Primary and secondary denitrification methods. Fundamentals of propagation of pollutants in the atmosphere.
- Syllabus of lectures:
Concept of legislation in the air pollution control. General and specific emission limits, emission ceilings. Limit values of ambient air pollutants. Principles of measuring of pollutants in emission.
Particle size and particle size distribution. Fraction PM10 and PM2,5. Particulate matter removal. General equation of particle motion. Gravitational, inertial, centrifugal and electrical principle of separation. Diffusion of particles. Total and grade efficiency of separation. Pressure drop. Classification of particle separators, basic characteristics.
Principles of gaseous pollutants removal. Desulphurization - classification of methods. Dry additive method, intensification, wet-dry calcium oxide method, wet limestone method - principles and basic characteristics. Fuel combustion and nitrogen oxide formation. Primary denitrification methods. Secondary denitrification methods - principles and basic characteristics.
Propagation of pollutants in the atmosphere. Vertical temperature gradient. Stability class of the atmosphere. Wind speed distribution, wind classes, vertical wind profile, wind rose. Gaussian plume model of the pollutant dispersion from point source. Pollution calculation.
- Syllabus of tutorials:
Simplified determination of emission mass flow and annual pollution charge from source of emission. Forms of particle size distribution. Calculation of particle separation velocities for principal separation principles. Calculation of dry desulphurization method. Calculation of maximum immission concentration near the chimney.
- Study Objective:
To get fundamental knowledge and skills in areas of air pollution control - separation methods of main pollutants as solid particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and NOx and fundamentals of propagation of pollutants in the atmosphere.
