Introduction to Biomedical Engineering and Informatics

Synopsis:

Aim of the course is to introduce students into the area of biomedical engineering and informatics. It is focused on various issues starting from basic cybernetic approaches to research and modelling of living organisms, over measurement and processing of biological signals, up to medical devices and health care information systems. During laboratory exercises the students acquire basic experience and skills with application of medical devices, imaging systems, biomedical informatics and processing of biomedical data and signals.

Requirements:

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introductory topics of biomedical engineering and informatics.

2. Biological signals, their genesis, measurement and processing.

3. Heart and its activity, electrocardiography.

4. Neurons, brain, central neural system.

5. Electroencephalography.

6. Sense organs, their functions, measurement and evaluation of their characteristics.

7. Modeling and simulation of organs and organisms.

8. Medical imaging I (rtg, computer tomography).

9. Medical imaging II (MRI, ultrasound, PET, SPECT, etc.).

10. Biomedical informatics, data, information, knowledge.

11. Artificial intelligence in medicine.

12. Robotics in medicine.

13. Telemedicine, principles and examples of applications.

14. Assistive technologies, smart homes.

1. Matlab and Simulinkg as modeling environment, definition of individual tasks.

2. Fundamentals of data and signal processing I.

3. Fundamentals of data and signal processing II.

4. ECG Measurement I.

5. ECG Measurement II.

6. EEG Measurement I.

7. EEG Measurement II.

8. Body composition measurement using bioimpedance.

9. Audiometry and spirometry.

10. Demonstration of medical devices I.

11. Demonstration of medical devices II.

12. Application of artificial intelligence to biomedical engineering and informatics.

13. Medical imaging systems.

14. Final evaluation of individual task results.
