Social Aspects of Energetics

The main topic of the course is the presentation of information from a variety of ideological streams in the context of global energy problems of mankind. The aim is to show the complex nature of the problems and to facilitate orientation of students in them. Students will learn about the engineering and economic approaches to the assessment of stocks of primary energy sources, the issue of energy security, for example in connection with the oil crises, with views of socially relevant groups of opinion on the direction of energy policy, the current policy implemented in the EU and the Czech Republic. The course also includes definitions and aspects of sustainable development, the importance of energy to the national economy and the debate on global climate change.
Active participation in the seminars, processing semester project, succeed in the final test.
- Syllabus of lectures:
Global problems of mankind according to the UN and energy, the development of civilization and the increase in energy consumption, the role of energy in evolution of civilization. Global (non)issues and the „real“ problems of mankind (J.L. Simon and B. Lomborg). Social aspects of energy policy, the political importance of energy, the reaction of world economies on oil crisis, the energy market, 3E - energy, economics and ecology. Resources from the perspective of economics. Overview of „classical“ energy technologies. Renewable energy sources - the consequences of the physical laws of energy transformations for the reality of energy projects. EU energy strategy, the „first Paces“ committee and report, Energy Policy of the Czech Republic. Energetic aspects of the strategy of sustainable development of society, the Czech Republic energy policy, the precautionary principle. Myths and facts about global warming, cost-benefit analysis of global issues.
- Syllabus of tutorials:
Prices in the energy sector, start up of the seminar work, individual consumption evaluation. Working with invoices, consumption calculations, price fixing, choice of topics for individual work. Presentation of seminar work.
- Study Objective:
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with topics that submit from different perspectives essential aspects of one of the most extensive human activities - energy production and consumption. Students are familiar with a wide range of opinion positions and afterwards are able to take part in debates about submitted topics in lectures and exercises. Student is able to work with objective information from the energy and create a personal opinion on the issue. In practical exercises the students are familiar with pricing in power production and resources, the ways of evaluating individual energy needs and new technologies in the power generation.
