Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to win necessary knowledge for strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation. Further aim for students is to master general knowledge in management of economical subjects and public administration institutions and understanding of basic models and instruments which are used in managerial practice. On the grounds of gained competences the students are able to process basic procedures of strategic management. Chosen business strategy is a foundation for the construction of the strategic plan.

Syllabus of lectures:

LESSON 1 (4 hours) -

Management in business activities

Market economy, need of new managerial principles. Management - basic concept. Direction of modern management development. Significance of strategic thinking in strategic management.

Content of strategic management

Definition of strategic management. Model of strategic management. Strategy in managerial processes.

Strategy formulation

Mission statement, Vision statement, long-term objectives - strategic outcomes. Strategy for goals achievement.

Business environment analysis

Business Intelligence and Competitive Intelligence. External analysis (macro- and mezoenvironment). Internal analysis. SWOT analysis. Evaluation of results obtained through analysis.

LESSON 2 (4 hours) -

Strategic analysis

Scenario formulation. Whole-company strategy generation (TOWS matrix, IE matrix, SPACE matrix, Grand Strategy matrix). Alternate functional strategy generation (innovation strategies, marketing strategies). Choose of optimal strategy for strategy programme fulfilment.

Strategic scenarios and alternatives concerning goals oriented on business performance with respect to identified risk

Basic methods of Risk Management. Business performance and contemporary accesses to its identification. Factors having influence on business performance. Performance projection into strategic goals. Construction of strategic variants within scenarios. Contingency planning.

Initial strategic plan revision

Strategic alternatives and scenarios evaluation. Setting scenarios parameters. Strategic outcomes correction.

LESSON 3 (4 hours) -

Strategy implementation

Planning activities

Strategic plan creation, strategic planning cycle. The main goals of strategic plan (short-term setting, procedures for their achievement, allocation of resources). Investment programmes management. Financial plan design. Management by objectives. Contemporary views on managerial activities during strategy implementation.

Organising

Organisation structure characteristics (functional, matrix, project). Changeover to a flat organisation structures, process management. The optimal organisation structure for certain strategy. Mintzberg pentagon. Contemporary application of organisation structures (lean production, fractal firms, hollow enterprises, cellular organisations, networking, JIT). „Spin-off“ enterprises. Organising changes resistance.

Human resources in strategy implementation

Choose and placement of HR, Leadership. Motivation theories. Use of new methods for performance measurement. Firm's culture. Business Ethics. Social responsibility of firms.

Complex performance management methods supporting the strategy implementation

Balanced Scorecard, EFQM, Performance Prism - principals and use possibilities.

LESSON 4 (4 hours) -

Strategy evaluation

Strategic control processes. Strategy evaluation processes. Performance measurement of strategy. Labour performance measurement. Managerial performance control. Performance evaluation methodology. Evaluation framework. Controlling. Reporting. Financial analysis of performance. Performance interpretation. External performance evaluation - rating.

Final overall information about strategic management

Firm ´s growth principles. Acquisitions and transformations, Management of firm ´s growth. Methods of business performance rising. Process management. Knowledge management. Transformation management. Turnaround. Reengineering.

Life cycle if enterprises

Partial phases of life cycle. Business remediation. Firm ´s liquidation. Insolvency and bankruptcy. Crisis management.

Strategic management in globalisation processes

Globalised market. Globalisation factors. Impact of contemporary global environment on management of the firms. Opportunities for performance rising in contemporary global environment. Organisation transformation in global environment.

LESSON 5 (4 hours) -

Risk management in strategic planning. Change management. Change management planning and managing.

LESSON 6 (4 hours) -

Strategic management in Public Administration: differences in organisations management, Offices, Regions

LESSON 7 (4 hours) -

Innovation management - panel discussion with outstanding experts.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Programme of seminars is divided into 5 partial units:

1. Introduction - seminars organisation instructions, credit conditions, Project commissioning. Strategy formulation - mission statement, vision statement, strategic goals deduce, setting of profile strategy.

2. Analysis of business environment - identification, analysing and prediction of key environmental factors with impact on strategic plan.

3. Strategic scenarios construction - strategy analysis, choice of relevant strategy.

4. Strategy implementation - short-time goals setting, construction of strategic budgets and financial plan.

5. Strategy evaluation - evaluation of financial plan ´s performance, gap analysis, corrections draft, controlling. Main differences between strategic management in business industry and public administration organisations.

Each seminar consists of 4 hours (2 x 90 minutes).

Students elaborate projects in project teams of 4 - 5 members.

Main task of participant of the course is a seminar project creation concerning strategic plan design of a real organisation. In this effort students are supported by theoretical thesis gained during lessons, by study of relevant literature and from organisation ´s management. There is a space to discuss and improve outputs of the project on seminars. At the end of the term students submit seminar project in form of the entire strategy plan of the firm. Final presentation of the strategic plan will be evaluated (during the last seminar).

Study Objective:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

. explain benefits of using strategic management in firms;

. describe processes of strategy creation in the firm;

. choose information relevant for strategic plan construction;

. construct basic strategic scenarios;

. analyse impact of business environment on the strategic plan;

. evaluate the performance of the strategy.
