Department of Circuit Theory
Synopsis:

The course is designed to acquaint students with the basics of analog electronic circuits. The first part is devoted to fundamental transistor amplifiers and elemental structures of analog integrated circuits. Then the typical applications of operational amplifiers are introduced, including non-linear networks and basic frequency filter design and implementation. Problems of oscillators are discussed at the conclusion.

Requirements:

Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and elements.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Non-linear elements for amplifiers, their models, linearization method, operating point - DC biasing.

2. Single-stage amplifiers with bipolar junction tranzistor (CE, CB, CC), principles, fundamental analysis of the characteristics (gain, input and output resistance?).

3. Single-Stage amplifiers with unipolar tranzistor (CS, CG, CD), frequency response of the single-stage amplifiers - lower and upper cut-off frequency, Miller?s Theorem.

4. Active load, current mirrors, Darlington configuration, output stage, amplifier classes.

5. Multistage amplifiers, cascode - frequency response, differential amplifier (non-linear transfer characteristic, linearization, differential and common-mode input signal).

6. Operational amplifier, basic configuration with idealized Op amp (inverting and non-inverting amplifier, differential amplifier, summer, integrator), the real properties.

7. Non-linear operational networks: bistabile circuit (comparator with hysteresis), precision rectifier, peak detector, logarithmic amplifier, isolating amplifiers.

8. Feedback, some properties of negative feedback, stability of feedback systems, frequency compensation.

9. Introduction to frequency filters, types and specification, first-order filters - transfer characteristics in the frequency and time domain, two-port network.

10. Synthesis of electrical filters, implementation (LC, cascade synthesis - second-order filters), principle of the switched capacitor circuits - tuned filters.

11. Principle of oscillators - the oscillation criterion, oscillator types and their circuit solution, regenerative circuits - astable multivibrator.

12. Function generators, Voltage Controlled Oscillator, the principle of phase locked loop.

13. Transistor as a switch, analog switches - the design and use, switching of inductive load - the principle of switching power supply.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Diode network, linearization. Introduction to simulation program.

2. Basic single-stage amplifier with bipolar junction transistor, biasing, linearization. Verification using simulation.

3. Single-stage amplifiers with bipolar junction transistor, calculation of linearized parameters.

4. Single-stage amplifiers with field-effect transistor, assignment of semestral works.

5. Multistage amplifiers, differential pair, cascode, frequency response.

8. Laboratory measurements of selected exercise, individual tuition of semestral works.

9. Laboratory measurements of selected exercise, individual tuition of semestral works.

10. Laboratory measurements of selected exercise, individual tuition of semestral works.

11. Presentation of individual work.

12. Presentation of individual work.

13. Closing tutorial. Accreditation.

Study Objective:

The course is designed to acquaint students with the basics of analog electronic circuits.

The course is completed by final examination during exam period. This consists of a mandatory written test and an optional part (an exaple calculation and oral part). The optional part of the exam is not required, if a student does not require a better rating than D (satisfactory).

Student can attend the oral exam only if the sum of his points from the semester and mandatory test is greater than 60.

If the oral examination demonstrate a basic ignorance, the student receives F rating, regardless of the gained points.
