Synopsis:

The course focuses on the area of digital modulation, coding and physical layer signal processing in communication systems. The exposition is systematically built along the theoretical line which allows to reveal all inner connections and principles. This allows the students to develop the knowledge in an active way and use it in a design and construction of the communication systems. In a broad area of the digital communications, we focus on the essential principles. Those are further extended in the optional courses.

Requirements:

see moodle.kme.fel.cvut.cz

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Digital modulation and coding, general definitions, basic properties, classification.

2. Digital linear/nonlinear memoryless modulation (PSK, QAM, FSK,...).

3. Digital linear/nonlinear modulation with memory (TCM,CPFSK, CPM, GMSK,...).

4. Digital space-time, adaptive and multiplexing modulations (STM, OFDM, MCM,...).

5. Digital modulation with impulse carrier - UWB. Multiuser communications (CDMA, FDMA, TDMA, SDMA).

6. Spectral properties of digital modulation.

7. Codes on GF(m). Block codes (Hamming, BCH, RS, ...) and convolutional codes (recursive/nonrecursive).

8. Constellation space codes (coded modulation), TCM.

9. Elements of space-time coding, diversity, multiplexing gain. Elements of turbo-coding (serial/parallel concatenated), LDPC.

10. Input-output model of the communication channel (AWGN, lin./nonlin., fading, multipath, MIMO) and its properties related to the receiver signal processing.

11. Demodulation and decoding, sequence/symbol, optimality criterion. Demodulator metric - correlation, signal space, SODEM (APP, LogAPP domains).

12. Decoding of the modulations and codes with memory, Viterbi algorithm. Suboptimal detectors.

13. Elements of iterative decoding (Soft In - Soft Out FBA, Factor Graph SPA).

14. Error rate performance, Union Bound, pairwise errors. ISI. Elements of synchronization and equalization.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Simulation and design CAD tools for digital communications.

2. Linear modulator of the PSK/QAM class.

3. Nonlinear modulator of the CPM class.

4. Coded modulation of the TCM class.

5. Demodulator (MF, metric, suboptimal, differential).

6. Decoder for modulation and codes with the memory (Viterbi algorithm).
