Synopsis:

The main material characteristics as conductivity, permittivity, magnetic susceptibility etc. and their relations to the composition and structure are explained. The subject is concentrated namely on the metal conductors, semiconductors, dielectrics, magnetics and superconductors.

Requirements:

The credit requirements - seminar presentation, protocols of labs. and test.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.The physical origin of material properties. Atoms, bonds, molecules, crystals.

2.States of matter - gaseous, liquid, solid phases, phase equilibrium.

3.The crystal state, crystal structure, defects.

4.Diffusion and thermal properties of solid state.

5.Electron states in crystals, band model of conductors, semiconductors and insulators

6.Electrical conductivity of metals and electrolytes, Ohms law in differential form.

7.Materials for cables, resistors and contacts.

8.Electron states in semiconductors and band model of intrinsic, N type, P type semiconductor

9.Electrical conductivity of semiconductors and their temperature dependence. Properties and applications of known semiconductors, p-n junction.

10.Electrical conductivity of dielectrics, electrical breakdown intrinsic and thermal.

11.Dielectric polarization in harmonic field, complex permittivity, loss factor. Ferroelectric, pyroelectric and piezoelectric materials.

12.Magnetic phenomena and their physical origin. The dia- , para-, fero-, feri-, and antifero- magnetic materials.

13.Soft and hard magnetic materials. Transformers and memory materials.

14.Superconductivity. Basic properties of superconductors. Materials and their application.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1.Exercise schedule and introduction to laboratory exercises.

2.The temperature dependence of the conductors and semiconductors conductivity.

3.The measurements of the complex permittivity of the dielectric.

4.The magnetic properties as a function of the frequency of applied field.

5.The crystal structure and properties, examples for computations.

6.The properties of conductors and semiconductors, examples for computations.

7.The properties of dielectrics and magnetics, example for computations. Credits.

Study Objective:

The goals of study are the learning of main material characteristics and understanding of material properties in relation to their structure and chemical composition.
