Supervisor:
Department of Solid State Engineering
Synopsis:

Neutron diffraction is a powerful method for a detailed understanding of the static and dynamic properties on atomic scale of materials in many field of sciences and industry. This course introduces to the fundamental principles of nuclear and magnetic scattering and penetration of thermal neutrons. From this point of view the following aspects are very important: sample size in relation to industrial scaling, neutron penetration though machinable materials ( and consequent case of construction of environmental chambers), neutron atomic contrast and magnetic scattering possibilities. Examples of the different neutron scattering techniques are given.

Requirements:

knowledge of structure of solid state and solid state theory (lectures SPL1, SPL2, TPL1, TPL2 and 11AND at FNSPE)

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Materials sciences and diffraction methods. 2. Thermal neutrons, scattering, absorption. Field of applications. 3. Diffractometers, spectrometers, resolution function. 4. Research reactors, pulsed neutron sources, sample environment deviced, detectors. 5. Data treatement, computer control of diffraction experiments. 6. Data processing, code. GSAS, FULLPROF, RIETAN, RIET-N. 7. Powder structure analysis, method characterization, examples. 8. Quantitative texture analysis, ODF-Function, code: TODF-N, popLA. 9. ODF - interpretation, anisotropy of physical and mechanical properties. 10. Magnetic structure and magnetic ordering transitions. Examples. 11. Small angle neutron scattering. 12. Strain analysis, measurement of gradients. 13. „In-situ“ experiments. 14. Neutron radiography. ENSA-European Neutron Scattering Association
