Synopsis:

Subject is offered to PhD students and it is devoted to measuring technique in general, with emphases to advanced DAQ systems and their use in engineering. It includes strategy and design of the measurement. Study program of deals also with accuracy of the measurements and commonly used techniques for their result interpretation. Bases of transducers and the most frequently used sensors are described and their function is explained (namely temperature, pressure, flow and concentration measurements are discussed and demonstrated in details). Fundamental interfaces are investigated as well - RS232, GPIB, CANBUS, multiplexers, ELMB modules, typical measuring cards. The following software applications are available and included in curriculum : LabView, BridgeView, TestPoint, PVSS II.

Requirements:

Solid knowledge of engineering physics, basics of the electronics circuits, computer and programming literacy (hardware and software).

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Engineering experiment and its methodology

2. Accuracy of the measurements

3. Data analyses and evaluation

4. Basic sensors and transducers to measure physical properties

a.temperature measurements

b.pressure measurements

c.flow measurements

d.concentration measurements

5. Basics of the DAQ system design

a.Hardware (PC and measuring cards and interfaces)

b.Software (Lab View, Bridgeview, Test Point, PVSS II)

6. Typical sensor calibrations

a.temperature sensors

b.pressure sensors

7. Calibration and accuracy enhancement of the electronics

8. Practical DAQ system design (includes at least two types of sensors)

a.with GPIB interface

b.with CAN Bus interface

9. Real experiment with prepared DAQ system

10. Data analyses and evaluation

11. Basics of the measurements using distance control (distributed projects, far distant desktop, etc.)

12. Cost effectiveness in DAQ system design.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Theoretical computing exercises - uncertainty and errors, methodology of the data analyses and evaluation. Hands on implementation of the typical sensors/transducers, measuring cards, multiplexer and PC modification for use of standard and frequently used DAQ hardware. Sensor and electronics calibration. Practical implementation of the at least two different DAQ systems and their verification through real measurements. Rules of the data analyses and evaluation and final report of DAQ measurement in written form.

Study Objective:

Significantly extend theoretical and namely practical knowledge about contemporary methods of the engineering experiment in wide range of engineering applications.
