Synopsis:

Errors contra uncertainties, linear and nonlinear regression functions, the least square methods, practical solutions, basic electrical sensors and transducers for measurement of physical properties, analog and digital signals - digitalization of the analog signal. Theme of the subject is strongly supported through practical laboratory exercises aimed to PC controlled experiment and DAQ systems (namely temperature, pressure and flow measurements). On top of that the instruction for experiment evaluation is also explained.

Requirements:

Sound knowledge in Physics I and II plus Lab exercises in Physics I and some experience with PC use in the laboratory work would be a help.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Methods in engineering experiment

2. Accuracy of the experiment

3. Data analyses and evaluation

4. Typical sensors/transducer for the engineering measurements

5. Basics of the DAQ systems

6. Step by step design of the simple DAQ system

Syllabus of tutorials:

Students will acquire knowledge about basic means required for measurements of physical properties, exercise of data evaluation and uncertainties will be conducted. Practical training in sensor/transducer use will be demonstrated. The simple DAQ system is to be put together and it will be verified via critical evaluation of the collected data.

Study Objective:

The course provides to students additional knowledge expanding the information about basic physics experiments. It provides a solid base for a design of the experiment assisted by PC computers.
