Synopsis:

The course is entry into the aerospace engineering study program. Following the bachelor's degree courses it introduces students to the basic concepts of the specialization, with the principles of flying and aircraft movements in the Earth's atmosphere.

Requirements:

Physics I., Physics II., Mechanics II. A, Thermodynamics A, Fluid Dynamics A

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Basic concepts, properties of liquids and gases, a division of aerodynamics and flight mechanics

2. Properties of the Earth's atmosphere, International Standard Atmosphere

3. Aerodynamic forces, moments and coefficients, coordinate systems, the force equilibrium on the airplane

4. Basic laws of physics used to describe the flow of gases

5. Determination of basic flight parameters from aerometric data (speed and altitude measurement)

6. Geometric characteristics, flow field and aerodynamic profile, airplane wings

7. Aerodynamic profiles and their lift, drag and moment characteristics

8. Aerodynamic profiles and their lift, drag and moment characteristics, profile series

9. Basic aerodynamics of a lifting surface, finite wing span flow field, induced drag

10. The distribution of lift along the wing span, Schrenk method, maximum lift and aerodynamic characteristics of the wing

11. Aircraft aerodynamics fundamentals, means for increasing the lift and drag of an airplane

12. Fundamentals of propeller and aerodynamics of rotating lifting surfaces

13. The basic force equilibrium and flight performance in steady horizontal flight

1. Motivational introduction

2. International Standard Atmosphere

3. Measurement of an aircraft speed

4. Wind tunnels

5. Laboratory measurements - pressure sensors, hotwire anemometry

6. Pressure distribution on the profile, calculation of lift and pitching moment

7. Properties of profiles, profile series

8. Calculations of basic profile types characteristics - introduction to panel methods

9. Introduction to CFD

10. The spanwise distribution of lift, Schrenk method

11. Thrust and power characteristics of the propeller

Study Objective:

Introduction to the physical principles of aerodynamic forces, the basic methods for their determination and introduction to flight mechanics.
