Anotace:

The course addresses the design and dimensioning of river engineering works to create and ensure sufficient capacity of a channel as well as to ensure the ecological functions of the watercourse. Design of channels and modifications of formerly heavily engineered channels involves concepts and techniques of open-channel hydraulics and fluvial geomorphology. Special attention is paid to engineering of river channels in heavily urbanized areas and in predominantly rural landscape.

Students will learn to understand the role and importance of river engineering works within multipurpose water engineering and water management. A fluvial system can be seen from long-term perspective as the main agent of the landscape (riverscape) change due to erosion, aggradation and transport processes.

Students will master the physical laws governing flow of water, transport of sediment, dispersion of solute, and morphological changes. They will be able to design the main regulating measures in channels, i.e. flow-guiding structures, artificial levees, and channel revetments, as an example, and eliminate the negative impacts of introduced human activities.
