- Synopsis:
-
Use of commercial finite element code for solving practical problems in mechanics.
- Requirements:
-
Students should have a background in elasticity and plasticity of materials, dynamics and strength of materials. They should also be familiar with PC.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
1. Linear statics: bending of a coated beam. 2. Nonlinear statics: elastic-plastic deformation of a pressurized tube. 3. Contact: material indentation. 4. Complex nonlinear task: sheet drawing. 5. Fracture mechanics: 2D and 3D through- crack. 6. Dynamics: vibrations of a
beam. 7. Heat transfer: laser surface heating. 8. Thermal stresses: heated bimetallic strip. 9. Fatigue of materials: fatigue crack propagation. 10. Various matrix solvers, user subroutines and procedures.

- Study Objective:
-
Knowledge:
The application of mathematical methods and tools in the analysis and solution of engineering problems.
Skills:
By the end of the course, students should be able to: build FE mesh, select an appropriate FE element type for the physical problem desired, apply boundary conditions, postprocess and interpret results.
