Tutor:
Aleš Materna (gar.), Vladislav Oliva (gar.)
Supervisor:
Department of Materials
Synopsis:

The course represents a brief introduction to the elasticity and strength of materials namely for the specialization Physics and Technology of Nuclear Fusion. General explication of the stress, strain and mechanical properties is elaborated for elastic tension, bending, shear and torsion of bars and beams.

Other classical problems (plane stress and strain, plates, shells) are explained only very briefly. The course contains also basic information about effect of plastic strains, creep, notches and cracks, and about a static and fatigue fracture.

Requirements:

Physics - mechanics. Mathematical analysis.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Stress. 2. Strain. 3. Basic mechanical properties. 4. Boundary conditions, supports and fixing of bars and beams 5. Forces and moments transmitted by slender members 6. Axially loaded bars 7. Cylindrical Pressure Vessel 8. Stresses and deflections under flexural loading. 9. Statically determinate and indeterminate beams 10. Beam shearing stresses 11. Torsion of circular shaft 12. Plane problems, plates and shells - only basic terms and relations. 13. Notches and cracks - only basic terms and relations 14. The basic of plasticity 15. Ductile and brittle fracture 16. Fatigue of materials 17. Creep

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

Knowledge: To obtain the basic knowledge about elasticity and strength of materials with respect to standard engineering applications.

Skills: To be able to assess stress and strain in simple structures namely in bars and beams. Student should understand basic problems od strength and lifetime of materials and structures.
