Synopsis:

The course is devoted to wave phenomena in solids. Basic concepts of wave elastodynamics are studied and elucidated in the course. The validity of the linear theory of generally anisotropic continuum is supposed.

Requirements:

The basic knowledge of differential and integral calculus, differential equations, theory of elasticity and continuum mechanics.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. The basic concepts, historical background, waves in strings.

2. The governing equations in linear elastodynamics, Helmholtz resolution, dilatational and distortional waves in infinite 3D medium.

3. Plane waves in 3D medium.

4. Surface waves.

5. Wave motion in the thin disc loaded in-plane by radial impact stress.

6. Dispersion of elastic waves and Rayleigh-type waves in the thin disc.

7. Longitudinal waves in thin rods.

8. Flexural waves in thin rods.

9. Approximate theory of longitudinal waves in thin rods (effects of lateral inertia-dispersion).

10. Wave propagation in 3D plates and rods.

11. Longitudinal impact of 3D semiinfinite rods.

12. Rayleigh-edge waves in thin orthotropic medium.

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Basic types of bulk and surface waves in 3D and 2D medium, geometric and directional dispersion of waves, definement of terms „thin“ bar or plate with respect to signal wavelengths.

Skills:

The ability to assess whether the given problem has to be solved as wave problem or not.
