Tasks in the field of materials engineering resulting from the development of nuclear power engineering, technical and economical significance of materials in nuclear power engineering facilities. Interaction of reactor radiation with the crystal lattice - types and probability of interaction, principles and character of main types of damage caused by radiation. Reconditioning of material damaged by radiation. Basic physical and metallurgical properties of reactor materials. Structural materials for work in the active zone of a nuclear reactor - main requirements on mechanical and other properties, specification of existing options and further prospects. Main materials used (steel, zirconium). Significance of materials and technology for maintenance of nuclear safety - requirements on the maintenance of quality, individual programmes of maintenance of quality, main methods of testing, assessment of residual life.
