Synopsis:

Theory and basic calculations of the following processes and equipment: flow in pipes and pipe networks, flow in porous and packed beds, filtration, sedimentation and bubbling, separation of mixtures by centrifugal force, fluidization, liquid mixing, storage and transport of particulate materials, crushing and milling, separation and granulation, mixing of particulate solids.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Introduction. Basic equations.

2.Friction losses. Basic calculations of pipes.

3.Gas flow in pipes. Basis of pipe networks calculation.

4.Flow of non-Newtonian fluids in pipes.

5.Calculation of pipes with pumps.

6.Flow in porous beds and packed columns.

7.Filtration.

8.Sedimentation. Hydraulic separation.

9.Bubbling, bubble columns, flotation.

10.Separation of mixtures by centrifugal force.

11.Fluidization.

12.Mixing of liquids. Mixing in static mixers.

13.Fundamentals of particulate mechanics. Storage and transport of particulate materials, Crushing and milling.

14.Separation and granulation, mixing of particulate solids.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Calculations of pipe and pipe networks. Calculation of gas flow in pipes

2. Calculations of non-Newtonian fluids flow in pipes Calculation of pipes with pumps.

3. Calculations of flow in porous beds and packed columns. Design calculations of cake and bed filters.

4. Settling velocity calculation. Design calculations of settlers and classifiers.

5. Design calculations of centrifuges and cyclones.

6. Calculation equipments with fluidized beds.

7. Design calculations of mixing equipments.

Study Objective:

Theory and basic calculations of the following processes and equipment: flow in pipes and pipe networks, flow in porous and packed beds, filtration, sedimentation and bubbling, separation of mixtures by centrifugal force, fluidization, liquid mixing, storage and transport of particulate materials, crushing and milling, separation and granulation, mixing of particulate solids.
