Synopsis:

The course enables students to improve their information literacy, i.e. capability and skills to search information in different kinds of resources and formats, to evaluate information relevancy, to obtain full-texts and to use information for academic writing in accordance with legal and ethical rules.

Requirements:

Working with computer and basic searching on the Internet.

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction to information searching. Topics for searching, terminology, query formulating, searching tools. Library catalogues, library portals, library services. Electronic databases - searching strategy, fair use, relevancy of results. Digital libraries. Citation indexes. E-books, e-journals. Information for R&D on the Internet. Evaluation of free access resources. Technical standards and standardization process. Patents and intellectual/industrial property protection. References and citations, ethical use of information, copyright, plagiarism.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Information literacy pre-test. Working with terminology and formulating of a specific query for searching. Using of library portals and directories and library catalogues searching. Federated search engine 360Search and EBSCOhost Research Database. IEEE Xplore Digital Library and ScienceDirect. Web of Science and Scopus, Using e-books and E-Journal Portal. Scirus, Google Scholar and Directory of Open Access Journals. National and international standard offices and searching databases of standards. National and international patent offices and databases of patents. Citation styles and formats, plagiarism quiz, citation generators.

Study Objective:

Students will know where to find scholarly information, how to use professional information resources properly and effectively, they will be able to evaluate relevancy of information found in scientific databases and free sources on the Internet, and they will learn how to cite in their scholar works.
