Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to trace the most important features of Gothic cathedral architecture including its social context and building technology. Students should acquire to interpret Gothic architecture according to its geometrical design and social function.

The origins of Christian architecture. 2. The Romanesque basilica. 3. Gothic cathedrals in Western Europe. 4. The beginnings of Gothic architecture in Bohemia. 5. 1st trip - St Vitus´Cathedral. 6. Gothic cathedral of St Vitus, 1st phase - Mattew of Arras. 7. Mid-term exam. 8. 2nd phase - Peter Parler. 9. Architecture in use: liturgy and veneration of relics in the cathedral. 10. Architecture and visual arts: sculpture and painting in the cathedral. 11. 2nd trip - National Gallery. 12. Town and the Cathedral. 13. 3rd trip Emmaus monastery and the New Town of Prague. 14. Final Exam.
